Garmin GDL 40 On-Demand Cellular Marine Weather Receiver
Details
Garmin International and Tiger GPS are pleased to announce the Garmin GDL 40, the first and only cellular marine weather receiver on the market today. A low-cost marine weather solution, the GDL 40 brings on-demand graphical weather and radar data directly to your NMEA 2000 compatible Garmin chartplotter (Compatible with GPSMAP 400, 500 series (NMEA 2000 versions only), 700 series, 4000/5000 series, 6000/7000 series) – with coverage tailored for the U.S. or Canada (GDL 40 weather data reception requires the user to be within range of a cellular phone tower). The GDL 40 provides live weather radar, wind speeds and direction, sea surface temperatures, wave heights, local forecasts, county/marine warnings, lightning, buoy data and more. The GDL 40 communicates with nearby cellular towers to receive weather data, purchased directly from a Garmin chartplotter on a day-to-day basis, as needed. Expected range from cellular towers would be up to 12 to 15 miles. The waterproof, low-profile antenna design affords easy installation with pole, surface or under-deck mounting options.
Once users have activated their GDL 40 via their online MyGarmin account, they can purchase day passes for just $4.99 USD in the U.S. (In addition to a $9.99 annual subscription fee, first year FREE with purchase of GDL 40!) Day passes provide users with 24 hours of continuous weather data. After each year of service, the GDL 40 requires an annual fee of $9.99 in order to continue connecting to the cellular data networks. Once users have renewed their annual subscription, they can then continue purchasing day passes as desired.
