The Garmin TR-1 Gladiator's patented Shadow Drive technology allows manual course changes to be made from the helm without disengaging the autopilot. So, you never have to "wrestle" the system for control - or put the autopilot into "standby" mode to gain access to the wheel. The advanced Shadow Drive sensor will automatically send a command to the course computer when is senses your hand-steering inputs, allowing you full control of your vessel at any time. Just grab the wheel and turn for instant course changes on the fly. Then, once you've steered the boat onto its new course, simply release the helm and the autopilot will automatically resume control. If you know how to steer your boat, you know how to run the Gladiator. It can be installed on most powerboats with hydraulic steering. And it can interface with any Garmin GPS or NMEA 0183 compatible chartplotter for pushbutton navigation to selected waypoints or routes. With patented processing technology, the TR-1 Gladiator steers to maintain a constant magnetic heading. Control response is fast, smooth, precise. You Won't Miss the Rudder-Angle Transducer
Most marine autopilots have a separate rudder feedback sensor, and they're a royal pain in the you-know-what. Prone to high failure rates and stuck in a remote, hard-to-reach area of the boat, these finicky electro-mechanical sensors are the # 1 source of autopilot headaches and product failures industry wide.
So, TR-1 got rid of them.
Using patented mathematic algorithms and technology, the Garmin TR1 calculates its own rudder rate command from a combination of compass, gyro and engine tachometer inputs. So, it doesn't need a remote rudder-angle sensor to measure this feedback. Voila: No more transducer maintenance or replacement. No more downtime for sensor-related repairs. The TR-1's rudder rate is calculated by a high-speed digital microprocessor and sent to the pump controller 20 times a second, thus assuring unsurpassed reliability and lightning-quick steering response.

No other autopilot in the TR-1 Gladiator's class can match it for turn rate control and smoothness. It responds effortlessly at virtually any speed - and can easily be set to hold position against wind, waves or heavy current. Plus, it'll even steer in reverse!
Whether you're accelerating or decelerating, the TR-1's response is fast, precise and automatic. Unlike most autopilots, which only provide one or two turn rate settings based on boat speed, the Gladiator lets you make stress-free turns based on the G-force felt by its included rate gyro. As a result, turns at slower speeds are sharp and efficient - while at higher speeds they remain smooth and comfortably coordinated. No jerking. No wavering. No stomach-churning surprises.

Maximum Control at Your Fingertips
Garmin's TR1 Gladiator system represents a significant breakthrough for owners of all type of hydraulically steered powerboats: Inboards, outboards, stern drives, diesels - almost every configuration imaginable.
The standard wired controller unit can be mounted near the helm or used as a handheld mobile portable. For multi-station use, the Gladiator can easily be set up with two, three or more control sets to allow for a handheld at every station. A handy Heading/Resume button on the controller lets you instantly save your current heading - and then return to it when the button is pressed again. Better still, for the ultimate in onboard freedom and convenience, an optional wireless remote - roughly the size of an automotive keyless entry "beeper" - offers full remote steering control with pushbutton simplicity.
Do We Detect a Pattern Here?
Automating turns and maneuvers with the TR-1 Gladiator gives boaters and fishermen a real on-the-water advantage. Its operation is pushbutton-simple, and any number of pre-programmed turns and maneuvers can be selected: zigzag patterns, timed circles, step turns, U-turns, etc. Plus, a GPS interface lets you set up search patterns, cloverleaf patterns and orbits (to starboard or port) around a pre-selected waypoint. In an emergency "man overboard" situation, a press of the MOB button cues the TR-1 to perform a perfect Williamson maneuver - the offset teardrop-shaped 180° turn considered best for returning the boat quickly to the victim's position. There's no GPS interface required for the MOB function. And in addition to being a great safety feature, you can also the use MOB button to auto-return your boat to any spot that looks promising for fishing, diving, or anchorage.
Zig-Zag: When you press the button on the controller, the TR-1 will begin to zig-zag across the heading line you were tracking. The zig-zag angle and length are user-selectable.
Circles: Great for staying with the fish, circle patterns are user-adjustable. Select lap times from 1 to 90 minutes.
Step turns: Automated turn angles can be preset from 1° to 90°. For each press of the controller button, the TR-1 will perform the selected degree of turn.
U-Turns: For quick course reversal, this Gladiator feature lets you select automatic U-turns (to starboard or port) at the press of a button.
Man Overboard: MOB is a standalone feature, no requiring GPS. Performs standard Williamson maneuver to return boat 180° to the point where MOB was activated. Can also be used as a return-to-fishing-spot function.
Cloverleaf: A useful pattern for repeatedly passing over a point where you think fish may be holding. Mark the center of the cloverleaf with a waypoint in your GPS. Length of the cloverleaf pattern is adjustable from 500 to 6,000 feet.
Search Pattern: Make an outward spiral from a waypoint marked on your GPS to search within a given area. You may set the spacing between laps from 50 to 1,000 feet by 50-foot increments.
Orbits: The autopilot will orbit the active waypoint in your GPS at a user-selected radius distance from the waypoint. Great for staying where the fish are hanging around a structure.
