GPS navigation has never been simpler - or more in-depth!
Tiger GPS is proud to announce the new Garmin StreetPilot c340. Following on the heels of the immensely popular c330, the c340 has two important additions: text-to-speech routing and optional traffic data services.
Text-to-speech not only tells you when to turn, it tells you where - the StreetPilot c340 will actually say the name of the street! For example, instead of saying "Turn right in 200 feet," the StreetPilot c340 will say "Turn right on Broadway in 200 feet," eliminating any possible confusion as to where to go and letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and convoluted roadways.
The StreetPilot "c-series" GPS navigators feature a simple touchscreen interface, with automatic route calculation to any destination and turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions along the way. Selecting a destination is straightforward and requires only a limited amount of input from the user. Plus, the StreetPilot c340 allows you to choose between a three-dimensional navigation view or the more traditional "bird's eye" overhead view.
Notification of traffic delays is a c340 option that lets drivers see congested areas via a color-coded map. This feature lets users avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route. This traffic awareness is made possible via the new Garmin GTM10 TMC receiver that connects to selected Garmin street navigation products. The GTM10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe through Clear Channel.
Garmin has also added the ability for customers to augment the pre-loaded maps with Custom POI's from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras. In addition, a proximity alert feature is included to optionally notify the driver of upcoming Custom POI's.
The StreetPilot c340 comes pre-loaded with highly detailed City Select NT street data of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The industry-leading database features nearly six million points of interest -- including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ - a world leader in premium-quality mapping. The StreetPilot c340 also has automatic route recalculation in case you miss a turn.
The StreetPilot c-series boasts distinctive and sleek styling - the units' only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The device is secured by a suction-mount cradle that fastens to the windshield, for easy portability between vehicles. Users can customize their unit's appearance with an array of colored faceplates (sold separately).

Q: What's the difference between the StreetPilot c340 and the StreetPilot c330?
A: The StreetPilot c340 adds text-to-speech, where it can speak street names in the directions, and traffic service capability. The StreetPilot c330 lacks those features, and they cannot be added. Physically, the units are the same otherwise. The StreetPilot c340 is the cheapest navigator with text-to-speech!
Q: What's the difference between the StreetPilot c340 and the StreetPilot 2720?
A: The StreetPilot c340 is the streamlined version from Garmin. The c340 has a compact case and simple-to-use touch-screen-only interface (no buttons!), a dual internal speaker and an internal battery to power the unit when not plugged in. The c340 lacks some of the more advanced features of the StreetPilot 2720, however, such as multiple-point routing, multiple-route storage, automatic dimming, speed alarms and an infrared sensor (remote control). It also uses a different trip computer algorithm.
Q: What's the deal with the traffic service?
A: The GTM 10 adds real-time traffic and weather data through an additional FM receiver. See our Garmin GTM 10 page for more detail.
Reviews
Secondly, Garmin's online support and downloadable upgrades are second to none. While not necessary, I'd suggest purchasing updated basemaps for the regions you'll be doing the most driving (N. America, Europe, etc) because the maps pre-loaded on the C340 are several years old. The cost is upwards of 75 dollars for each map last I checked. Most of the firmware/software updates however are free and well worth the 10 minutes, if that, it will take to download and install.
The unit itself is smaller than the online images suggest, however it is extremely powerful. A fully charged battery lasts 8 to 10 hours. I've driven extensively in my home city recently and have only re-charged it once. The casing is also durable - I've dropped the unit once during my first attempt at mounting it on the windshield.
There are only two buttons on the unit to press - the power button and volume wheel. Other than that, all other features are touch screen, and a PDA stylus can be used safely on the screen as well.
The unit comes packaged with a window mount, which does the job for me. Some people may opt for an optional dash mount, which ranges between 30 and 50 dollars depending on where you shop. There is also a portable power cord to plug into your car to save the battery, or the unit will charge itself when connected to your computer via the USB cable (also included) There is also a PERMENANTLY mounting dash suction cup for the unit - I'd only recommend using that if you plan on keeping the GPS in only one vehicle primarly.
I wouldn't have mind spending a little more to have a soft case included in the package - I'm still using the factory box as storage for the unit.
The unit itself is accurate to within a few meters, which is enough when driving. I live in Boston and drive around the metro-area often, and this unit has never lost a signal, despite the high rise buildings. It has understandably lost signal while underground in a lengthy tunnel, but re-acquired satellites in under a minute once above ground. The unit will also recalculate the route if you miss a turn in a minute or two, often less. I've purposely went off course to see how well it corrects for it. There is also an option to detour, in case you find yourself in a traffic line of construction. I have not tried this feature yet.
You can enter a number of "favorite" destinations to plan a road trip ahead of time, however you cannot create one single trip with a number of waypoints in between - this is something I would have liked to have seen. Again, though, not a huge deal.
The unit also has an extensive listing of points of interest, separated into categories ranging from food and lodging, to gas, hospitals, shopping, and recreation. This has proven useful to find the nearest Target and nearest State Park - invaluable.
I purchased this unit specifically to assist in my roadtrip down to Daytona Beach this summer. While I initially was skeptical - I've used road maps and written directions for the longest time with little trouble - I now will only use those items as a last resort. I highly recommend the Garmin for anyone looking for the most user friendly features for the best value. However, you should absolutely research several models in order to determine the best unit for your particular tasks and interests.
