Magellan eXplorist 400 Frequently Asked Quesions:
Q: What is the difference between the Magellan eXplorist 400 white and eXplorist 400 green?
A: The green-casing eXplorist is part of the Wilderness Bundle only; the white-casing eXplorist 400 comes in the standard package. There is no difference in quality or specifications.
Q: What is the difference between the new Magellan eXplorist 400, 500 and 600 and the previous versions?
A: The new Magellan eXplorist series features improved screen resolution, MapSend software compatability, SD card memory expansion, USB data transfer, and rechargable internal lithium-ion batteries, in the same compact form factor of the previous eXplorist models. The eXplorist 400 is the base model, the eXplorist 500 adds a color screen and the eXplorist 600 has a color screen with electronic compass, barometric altimeter and thermometer.
Q: How does the Magellan eXplorist 400 compare to, say, the Magellan Sportrak Pro or the Magellan Meridian Color?
A: The new Magellan eXplorist 400 has a sleeker design and is much lighter than the Sportrak or Meridian series. It combines the memory capability of the Meridian with the compact features of the Sportrak line, and adds a bright four-level grayscale screen and fast USB data transfer in a sleek, compact form factor to boot.
Q: Why is the Magellan eXplorist 400 so much cheaper at Tiger GPS than at other websites? How did you put together such a cheap bundle?
A: We are the leading online retailer for Magellan, so we buy in huge quantities, which allows us to bring you Magellan products at reduced prices. This reduced-price Wilderness Bundle is available to make the GPS shopping process easier for our customers.
Q: What kind of software is available for the Magellan eXplorist 400?
A: The Magellan eXplorist 400 has a built-in Americas map but is compatible with most types of MapSend software. You can use the MapSend DirectRoute software for street-level detail and driving directions; there's the MapSend Topo 3D USA for detailed topographical maps; there's the MapSend Worldwide Basemap for international use. See our complete selection on the Tiger GPS Software & Charts page.
Q: I heard that the new eXplorist series have 14 parallel channels. What does this mean?
A: The new Magellan eXplorist series has TrueFix technology that features 14 parallel GPS channels, supported by WAAS and EGNOS. The standard GPS receiver is 12 channels, which means that the new eXplorists can track up to two more satellites in the hemisphere than other receivers. The result is improved accuracy and faster times-to-fix.
Q: Did I get the right software?
A: Yes. All new Magellan products come with a MapSend DVD v.1.06, depending on your unit (the versions correspond to different units, NOT how "up-to-date" the software on the DVD is). This MapSend DVD contains free MapSend Manager and MapSend Lite software, which are essentially trip-and-waypoint managers. Also on this DVD are DirectRoute v3 and Topo 3D software available for unlock, meaning that you can purchase them directly through Magellan for the retail price. If you saved money and bought the software from us, such as DirectRoute v3, then the box will contain a way to unlock the software yourself without paying any extra fees. Typically, you will enter in your unit's serial number to "unlock" the software. The most up-to-date version of DirectRoute is v.3, and this is contained within the MapSend DVD. There is also an option to purchase Topo 3D USA v.1.5 or v.1.0 on the MapSend DVD. Topo 3D USA v.1.0 comes on CD-ROM and and v.1.5 comes on the MapSend DVD. There is no difference in the map data; the v.1.5 is optimized for use with newer eXplorist units (but still works with older units), and with an internet connection makes for a cleaner install. If you have an older unit or older PC, you'll want to stick with Topo 3D USA v.1.0 on CD, which must be purchased separately. So the MapSend DVD v.1.x contains the most up-to-date software available from Magellan; if you need DirectRoute for automotive navigation or Topo 3D for outdoors navigation, you're covered. The numbers are convoluted, but the top-notch software is there.
