ArcPad for Mobile GIS and Field Mapping Applications
Mobile computing is creating fundamental changes by adding the ability to take GIS data and tools with you into the field and interact directly with the world around you. Mobile GIS comprises the integration of a number of technologies:
- GIS
- Mobile hardware in the form of lightweight devices and ruggedized field PCs
- GPS
- Wireless communications for Internet GIS access
ArcPad is software for mobile GIS applications and tasks. ArcPad provides mapping, GIS, and GPS integration to field users via handheld and mobile devices. Data collection with ArcPad is fast and easy and improves field-based data validation and availability.
Why Use ArcPad?
Traditionally, the process of field data collection and editing has been time-consuming and error-prone. Geographic data traveled into the field in the form of paper maps. Field edits were performed using sketches and notes on paper maps and clipboards. Once back in the office, these field edits were deciphered and manually entered into the GIS database. The result has been that GIS data has often not been as up-to-date or as accurate as it should have been. Consequently, GIS analysis and decisions have been delayed.
Recent developments in mobile technologies have enabled GIS information to be taken into the field as digital maps on compact, powerful mobile computers, providing field access to enterprise geographic information. This enables organizations to add real-time (and near real-time) information to their enterprise database and applications, speeding up analysis, display, and decision making by using up-to-date, more accurate spatial data.
What's New in ArcPad 7
At version 7, ArcPad expands the capabilities of mobile GIS applications with new features that dramatically improve the productivity of working with spatial data in the field. ArcPad provides field-based personnel with the ability to capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display geographic information. ArcPad 7 offers enhancements in the areas of performance, ease of use, productivity, enterprise GIS integration and customization.
New features include:
- Quicker access and loading of spatial data
- Support for ArcGIS symbology and style sheets
- Advanced editing tools, including offsets, repeated attributes, segmented line features, snapping, and undo
- Integrated support for rangefinders and digital cameras
- Support for freehand marking and taking notes on maps
- Usability enhancements that streamline connecting a GPS and creating custom input forms
- Support for new raster data formats: JPEG2000, TIFF, MrSID MG3, and GIF
- Simple form customization within ArcPad
Who Uses ArcPad?
Many field-based tasks utilize geographic information that has benefited from the increased efficiency and accuracy of mobile GIS including:
- Asset inventory, which usually requires field data collection or mapping
- Asset maintenance, which usually requires updates to attribute information and geometry of GIS features
- Inspections, typically involving field assets or legal code compliance
- Incident reporting - for example, spatially recording accidents or events
- GIS analysis and decision making
These field-based tasks are common to many GIS applications, such as utility inspections and maintenance, mapping of natural resources, mineral exploration, recording of accidents, inspection of compliance to local government codes, mapping of wildfires, and many more.

Which MobileMapper CX package is for me?
There are currently six flavors of MMCX available for customers. To actually record your GIS data, you'll need a software system. The Mobile Mapper CX is compatible with pretty much any application that works with Windows CE. If you have existing software or are creating your own, the MobileMapper CX handheld only package (990586-01, click here) is the one for you. If you need software, Tiger GPS offers two dynamic solutions: the MMCX bundled with Magellan Mobile Mapping software or the MMCX bundled with ESRI ArcPad. Which of course leads to the question:
What's the difference between the Mobile Mapping Application and ESRI ArcPad?
Magellan's Mobile Mapping application is easier to use in the field, and is bundled with MobileMapper Office software, which supports import/export of common GIS files, SHP, MIF and DXF. ArcPad has more functionality with better symbology and graphics options, including support for much tighter zoom potential (the Mobile Mapping application only allows the user to zoom into a 10 ft area). ArcPad supports high-resolution MrSID imagery, which many customers use for background imagery, whereas the MM application does not, but has JPEG2000 support. The Magellan Mobile Mapping Application is well-suited for entry-level GIS people but supports ESRI datasets too; a person with limited GPS knowledge and technical ability can learn and use Magellan's software in a matter of minutes in the field, whereas a more advanced user will find ArcPad more suited to their needs. There's also the option add post-processing to the software. The post-processing option allows the user to record a separate data string on the unit and compare it to known reference points on the PC, to improve accuracy. While the MobileMapper CX typically provides sub-meter accuracy in real-time, post-processing can take it down to sub-foot!
Therefore, one can choose from the MobileMapper CX with Mobile Mapping Bundle (990586-02, click here), and add post-processing (990586-03, click here); or the MobileMapper CX with ArcPad Bundle (990586-04, click here), and add post-processing (990586-05, click here).
There's also a special package consisting of MobileMapper CX and GPSDifferential, the post-processing program for ArcPad, without an actual ArcPad license (990586-08, click here). This option is ideal for users who already have ArcPad and/or other ArcGIS software but want to add post-processing with the unit.
