Garmin Topo 24K Pre-Programmed Data Card FAQs
Q: What kind of card is it?
A: This Topo 24K data comes on a pre-programmed microSD card with an SD adapter, so that it will work on any of the units listed above. The microSD card is often packaged inside the adapter; just follow the instructions and pull the smaller card out of the bigger one.
Q: Can I get this detail onto my PC?
A: Not at this time. The Topo 24K card contains a lot of data, and is pre-loaded onto the card to make using it with your GPS unit easier. Of course, if you have any Garmin PC software, you can load and store waypoints and tracks; but the 24K topo detail will only be available on the card in the compatible unit.
Q: How does this Topo 24K card differ from a Garmin Topo 24K CD-ROM?
A: The Garmin Topo 24K CD-ROMs contain 24K data only for the major and National Parks listed; this Topo 24K card contains 24K data for the entire states listed, including the major parks.
Q: How does this Topo 24K card differ from Garmin City Navigator?
A: Garmin City Navigator is still the software to use for driving, or walking around in urban areas. The Topo 24K card does contain road information and can plan out routes, but most of the points-of-interest data is centered towards campgrounds and geologic features. There will be restaurant listings, for example, especially near the park, but not as many as you'd find on City Navigator maps.
Q: What is "24K" anyway?
A: "24K" refers to the map scale: these maps are comparable to the 1:24,000 scale paper charts provided by the U.S. Geological Survey, the most detailed topographical data available from government sources. Regular Garmin Topo software, and most other companies' software, is 1:100,000 scale; this means that the Topo 24K maps have more than four times the detail of the standard topo maps!
Q: Do I still need this Topo 24K card for my Garmin Colorado 400t or Oregon 400t?
A: The topo maps pre-loaded on the Colorado/Oregon 400t are 1:100,000 scale, so this card will be a very useful accessory if you're in one of the states it covers. The other Garmin Colorado and Oregon models don't have any detailed topo data pre-loaded, so this card is definitely what you'll want for coverage in the states listed above.
Q: What does this Topo 24K card do on my Garmin Colorado or Oregon that it won't on the other units it works with?
A: The Garmin Colorado/Oregon series supports 3D view and terrain shading, and also provides an elevation profile over time, so you can see what the terrain will look like across your entire route before you head out!
